About IT
History |
| 1996 |
The IHDP Scientific Committee requests Pier Vellinga, Director of the Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam, to initiate and co-ordinate preparations for the development of a Science Plan on Industrial Transformation.
|
| 1996-1997 |
A Scoping Report and a Tentative Framework of the Research Agenda on Industrial Transformation are prepared and provide the basis for the establishment of a Scientific Planning Committee (SPC).
|
| 1997 (October) |
The Scientific Planning Committee is established.
|
| 1997-1998 |
The SPC and interested researchers around the world exchange ideas and prepare background documents to determine the international research priorities for the IT Project.
|
| 1998 |
Eight regional workshops take place: Laxenburg (Austria), New Delhi (India), Kita-Kyushu (Japan), Bangkok (Thailand), Boston (USA), Brussels (Belgium), Sao Paulo (Brazil), and Nairobi (Kenya). In addition, the SPC solices research ideas and proposals from the broader scientific community and also approaches stakeholders in industry, government, and NGOs to further identify priorities.
|
| 1998-1999 |
The ideas generated at the regional workshops, additional research proposals are submitted to the IT Secretariat. Preliminary descriptions of the foci themes and their priorities provide the basis for the Draft Science Plan, the research framework for the IT Project.
|
1999
(24-26 February) |
The Open Science Meeting on IT is held in Amsterdam to further the development of the research project on IT. The main goals of the Open Science Meeting are threefold:
- to discuss the overall IT Draft Science Plan;
- to discuss the research cores and identify the major research questions and promising research ideas; and
- to solicit comments and input from the research community, research funding agencies, the private sector, and the policy community on the envisaged IT research programme and its foci.
An enthusiastic and dedicated group of over 140 international and multi-disciplinary researchers convenes to develop new ideas and relationships, forge ahead with core priorities, and strengthen the global IT network.
|
| 1999 |
The Draft Science Plan is significantly improved, based on the input and comments of a variety of stakeholders.
|
| 1999 (December) |
The Industrial Transformation Science Plan is finalised. Together with the publication of this document, the Scientific Planning Committee (SPC) completes the planning phase of the project.
|
| 2000 |
The Science Plan is distributed to over 1500 researchers world-wide and promoted at 10 meetings, 6 workshops, 7 conferences, 2 seminars and 1 Ph.D. course.
|
| 2000 (July) |
A new committee, the IT Scientific Steering Committee (SSC), which will guide the implementation of the IT Science Plan, is appointed.
|
| 2000 (December) |
The SSC meets for the first time to decide on an implementation strategy and define criteria for the selection of IT projects.
|
| 2001 |
A Project Endorsement Strategy is established and the implementation of the Industrial Transformation Science Plan through projects begins.
|
| 2001 (October) |
The SSC meets for the second time and makes first round of endorsement
